Community Renewal in Labrador

Community Renewal began in Labrador on 1 July 2004. Labrador joined the renewal area of Varsity Lakes to form the Gold Coast South renewal zone. Renewal activities will occur across the Gold Coast South zone until 30 June 2009.

What’s happening now

Residents, government, community and business are working together to develop a Renewal Zone Plan, which will be a blueprint for Community Renewal activities in the Gold Coast South zone.

About Labrador

Before European settlement, the Gold Coast’s land, water, flora and fauna formed the home of the Yugambeh Aboriginal people. There were a number of family clans, including the Kombumerri clan, who made use of the southern Gold Coast area. The Kombumerri clan developed fishing lines and nets to catch a variety of fish, turtles, crabs, dugong and shellfish. In 1878, a sugar farmer and an investor bought 139 acres of crown land north of Southport. It is believed that Labrador was named after the Labrador Peninsula in north-eastern Canada.

Australian Bureau of Statistics 2001 Census figures show the Labrador renewal area has a population of 20,101 with 4,861 families. About 16 percent are aged under 15 and 34.4 percent were born overseas. About 11.2 percent speak languages other than English and the Indigenous population is 1.5 percent.
