Community Renewal in Beenleigh

Community Renewal began in Beenleigh on 1 July 2004. Beenleigh joined the renewal area of Eagleby to form the Gold Coast North renewal zone. Renewal activities will occur across the Gold Coast North zone until 30 June 2009.

What’s happening now

Residents, government, community and business are working together to develop a Renewal Zone Plan, which will be a blueprint for Community Renewal activities in the Gold Coast North zone.

About Beenleigh

The Beenleigh area was originally used by the Jakambe tribal group of Aboriginal people. The area was opened up in 1840 by timber getters in search of cedar and hardwood, and settled in the early 1860s by Europeans. Early industries included sugar cane, maize and rum.

Australian Bureau of Statistics 2001 Census figures show the Beenleigh renewal area has a population of 8,381 with 1,964 families. Over one fifth (20.9 percent) are aged under 15 and about 25 percent were born overseas. About 5.6 percent speak languages other than English and the Indigenous population is about three percent.
