About Mooroobool

Mooroobool is the second largest, and one of the oldest, residential suburbs in Cairns. According to the External link Cairns City Council, Mooroobool received its name from Mooroobool Peak near Copperlode Falls Dam and is an Aboriginal name for ‘meeting of the waters’. It is also known that the word Mooroobool is a Gimuy Wallabarra Yidinji name for a head dress. Mooroobool has a diverse population, with a large public housing estate.

Australian Bureau of Statistics 2001 Census figures show the Mooroobool renewal area has a population of 4,793 with 1,236 families. Over one fifth (24.8 percent) are aged under 15 and 25.6 percent were born overseas. About 14.8 percent speak languages other than English and the Indigenous population is 11.2 percent.
