About Manoora

The Manoora area was used by various Aboriginal tribes, who lived off the region’s abundant natural resources, including taro, quandong, mutillo, fresh fish and crustaceans. Previously known as Enmore and then West Cairns, the suburb was renamed Manoora in the 1970s after the HMAS Manoora, a coastal passenger ship which began service on the Cairns to Fremantle run in 1935 and was requisitioned by the Royal Australian Navy for use during World War II.

Australian Bureau of Statistics 2001 Census figures show the Manoora renewal area has a population of 4,879 with 1,023 families. Just over one fifth (22.8 percent) are aged under 15 and 26.9 percent were born overseas. About 11.8 percent speak languages other than English and the Indigenous population is 17.1 percent.
