Community Renewal in Inala
Community Renewal began in Inala in December 1998. Inala joined the renewal area of Carole Park to form the Brisbane South West renewal zone. Renewal activities will occur across the Brisbane South West zone until 30 June 2009.
Achievements
Some of the many Community Renewal projects delivered in Inala include:
- Revitalising CJ Greenfield Park through landscaping, lighting, improvements to the sports fields, and construction of multi-purpose hard courts. Long-term unemployed people worked on the upgrades, gaining valuable work experience.
- Providing laptop computers to each Year 8 student at Glenala State High School, helping students to develop computer and information-gathering skills which in turn enhances their opportunities for further education and employment. The computers are passed to the new intake of Year 8 students each year.
- Funding for the Youth At Risk Network, a multi-agency network that helps young people at risk of entering the youth justice system by giving them the opportunity to engage in positive and meaningful activities as a deterrent to criminal activity.
What’s happening now
The Queensland Government extended Community Renewal in Inala for another five years from 1 July 2004. Residents, government, community and businesses are working together to develop a Renewal Zone Plan, which will be a blueprint for Community Renewal activities in the Brisbane South West zone.

About Inala
Inala was first settled by Europeans after World War II when the Serviceton Cooperative Society Board was established and bought 480 hectares of land in a bid to provide affordable accommodation. The area was originally named Serviceton and renamed Inala in 1953. Today, Inala is home to the largest Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population in Brisbane and has a rich cultural mix, with many Vietnamese families.
Australian Bureau of Statistics 2001 Census figures show the Inala renewal area has a population of 12,420 with 3,247 families. Just over one quarter (26.3 percent) are aged under 15 and 34 percent were born overseas. About 30.6 percent speak languages other than English and the Indigenous population is 7.2 percent.
