Community Renewal in Riverview/Dinmore
Community Renewal began in Riverview/Dinmore in December 1998. A Community Action Plan, developed in 1995 before Community Renewal’s introduction to the area, was updated by residents, government and other agencies as a blueprint for Community Renewal activities. The key themes in the plan included training and employment; safety and security; services and facilities; transport; reducing social fragmentation and conflict; community leadership and participation; facilities maintenance; and environmental protection.
Community Renewal activities were completed in Riverview/Dinmore on 30 June 2004. During the program’s presence in Riverview/Dinmore, Community Renewal funded about 58 projects with a value of $5.3 million. Over 70 percent of these funds were allocated to physical infrastructure development. Partners in Community Renewal initiatives invested about $4.2 million over the same period, bringing the combined investment in renewal activities to $9.5 million.
Achievements
Some of the many Community Renewal projects delivered in Riverview/Dinmore include:
- Funding for community leaders to undertake a Graduate Certificate in Social Science alongside regional managers of Government. The course enabled participants to learn together, and helped community and Government representatives to work together effectively in the renewal process.
- Funding for the Family Support Service operated by Anglicare Operation Kinder Community. The funds allowed the service to be expanded and enhanced to meet the growing demand for counselling services for young people and their families.
- Contribution to the purchase of a 34-seat community bus, which gives community groups and local schools greater mobility.
