About Community Renewal

A ‘place’ approach

The Community Renewal program operates in selected communities including urban areas in South East and regional Queensland and one remote Indigenous community. Community Renewal will work in these areas through to 2009.

Flexible solutions

Community Renewal has the flexibility to respond to a community’s top priorities – whether it’s stronger families, community safety, education and skills, economic development, access to jobs, housing options, health and well-being, community infrastructure, culture and identity, or being able to access local services.

Working together

Residents, governments, businesses, community groups and non-government organisations – in fact, everyone who lives or works in a renewal community – are encouraged to participate in identifying issues and finding solutions for their community.

Community participation

Community involvement ensures that governments know what services and infrastructure communities need. Funding enables Community Renewal’s dedicated team of officers to encourage the community to participate in government planning and decision-making processes.

Government partners

Community Renewal joins up Queensland Government departments and local governments to make sure planning and resources are coordinated. It’s streamlining the way government works to make life better for communities.

New ideas

The program’s flexibility and partnerships across government enable it to try new ideas and new ways of doing things. For example, an adventure ropes course in Deception Bay, developed in partnership with Education Queensland and two local community groups, is providing outdoor recreation opportunities for local young people and people with disabilities.

Kick-starting change

Community Renewal is a short-term initiative designed to give immediate support to communities. This support creates partnerships between governments and communities that can have long lasting results.
